Photography Class is in Session

One of 36 pictures for my first assignment
I started my photography class on Sunday, which means I have homework for the first time in almost two years—about 40 photos a week so far, which we edit and print during a separate lab. I’m really excited to hone my photography skills, and just in time for “Stewie” to arrive in June.
As much as I enjoy taking photos of random inanimate objects (they tend to be patient with me), I find that people make for much more interesting subjects, especially since my assignments are starting to call for movement.
So wants to be my model? Anyone need a new profile photo? A nice picture to hang on the wall or send home to the parents? Something for the holiday newsletter? Let me know—my assignments are pretty open for creativity, and I’m planning to go all out and buy a 5-in-1 reflector for outdoor shots.
I think it might finally be time to upgrade that Flickr account to pro. Our little class started a group to share our work along the way (granted, if you look at it now, it’s a bit sparse).

Love this photo. I like photos of people too, but never have really gotten up the nerve to do such pictures. Looking forward to seeing yours.
I completely agree – photos of people are so much more fun. I do like getting some flower photos and the occasional landscape, but after working at a portrait studio for the past two months, I’ve got to say that even though it takes a lot more patience, people are always better subjects. When you can quickly snap the shutter and catch that one moment a baby smiled – amazing. I love it :)
People are my favorite subjects. Especially candid shots. I’ve done a few portraits but it’s something that I get impatient with. There’s nothing like grabbing a quick shot of someone on the street that turns out to be a fantastic photo.
So jealous of you right now, by the way. And I would love to be one of your subjects. Too bad I live fifty bafillion miles away. One day though!
Steph, I wish we could take this class together! I miss our days of working together and getting excited about art.
I’d love taking a photo class…Canon USA is one of my PR clients and I’m loving learning more about SLRs and how to take good photos in macro.
