Life in the Loop

The Move (and why we called 911 on the first night in our new place)

After officially deciding to move on Wednesday, we picked up and moved everything on Friday morning. We’re both completely in love with the wide open space and tall loft ceilings of our new place. We put together a little stop motion below to show the process of moving. I left my camera above the fire place over the course of two days as we unpacked and put things away. You may notice something strange about halfway through the video. That would be the Chicago Fire Department.

Around 11:00 PM, an alarm started going off in our apartment (LOUD, and about every four seconds—our neighbors must already love us). Said alarm is up in the rafters completely out of reach, so we had no idea what to do. Figuring it was carbon monoxide, we called 911 and stepped out onto the patio to get fresh air and avoid death (Romulus was not a fan of being held out the door, and he was already stressed from the move). Although the fire department is across the street, they came in full truck, full siren and full gear (again, neighbors must love us). They tested the air for carbon monoxide (all clear at this point) and climbed into the rafters to shut off the alarm (brave man—he had to stand at the very top of the ladder to reach the alarm).

We figured it must have been caused by our gas fireplace, which we ran for about an hour earlier in the evening, although we’re not entirely sure. At least we feel like we did the right thing (and they came very quickly. See Mom? I’m very safe here).

And since we had a ladder in our apartment, I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some overhead shots of the apartment.
